One-a-Day...for the Heart: You Give Me Fever

One thing you don’t want to have during the Coronavirus pandemic is a fever. It is a common symptom of COVID-19 patients, and it presents suddenly, without warning, and lasts days on end, in some cases. A fever is a sign of infection in the body, so medical attention is needed to eradicate the source of infection. Easier said than done sometimes, and sadly, some fevers of unknown origin result in death.

The Coronavirus, which causes life-threatening fevers and symptoms, has been called our “unknown and unseen enemy” because doctors and scientists have not been able to stop it, even as they combine the most brilliant minds and cutting-edge technology in the world. Taking the temperatures of medical staff and patients every day is a mandatory precaution in diagnosing the virus, and many schools and businesses now do the same. The first sign of a fever is cause for concern and quarantine—a word that has become all too familiar in our time.

Another unseen, invisible enemy lurks about, too, watching for an opportunity to steal, kill, and destroy our destinies in God. The devil is poised to pounce, and would like nothing better than to catch you napping. Keep your guard up! (1 Peter 5:8 MSG). In much the same way that a fever often signals the decline of physical health and the slipping away of life, a lukewarm temperature of the soul signals the decline of spiritual health and the slipping away of the life of God in a Christian.

How quietly—invisibly, really—apathy creeps into our soul. Daily devotions and prayer slide off our priority list, watching the news (to stay informed, of course) seems more necessary than reading the Bible, being with other believers becomes less important, and the things of God fade off into the sunset. Our spiritual temperature goes from the red-hot fever level of a new believer to a pitiful, lukewarm sub-normal reading. And then the unseen enemy of our soul, Satan, himself, comes in for the kill. DON’T LET HIM! Take the necessary precautions. Keep your guard up, as Peter exhorts us! God-fever is great! Keep it red-hot with the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life every day.

Two disciples walking on the Road to Emmaus began talking to Jesus, without recognizing Him. Later, when Jesus broke bread with them and suddenly disappeared, they realized who He was, and said, Didn’t our hearts burn within us as He talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us? (Luke 24:32 NLT). They got the fever!

I decree the Spirit of God has put a red-hot burning heart in His people for this time! This is a fever we want, Church! Lord, give us God-fever!!
