Exhaustery
I’m just DONE. Finished. Can’t do another thing. Diagnosis: Exhaustery. It’s a made-up word that sounds a little more extreme than exhaustion, but most of us have experienced being completely exhausted—spent, worn out, totaled-- at one time or another. Those who make impossible To-Do lists are at the top of the Exhaustery Chart, but men and women alike—even kids—exhaust themselves by trying to pack more than twenty-four hours of activity into a day. Sometimes we juggle our sleep periods, thinking we can defy the need for sleep. “Night owls” will eventually get bags under their eyes, or if nothing else, they’ll be terribly crabby. Only God doesn’t need to sleep. Until we have our amazing resurrected bodies in Heaven, we do. Let’s face it: life moves fast if we’re under 70, and I even know some octogenarians who still haven’t gotten off the fast track of life! Jesus understands exhaustery. Imagine what HIS To-Do list looked like: Pray, teach in some villages, healing service in town square, fish with the guys, beverage check at wedding in Cana, dinner at Mary & Martha’s, check on lepers & heal, expel Legion from Gadarene man, wake up Lazarus, feed 5,000 with nothing, 40-day fast and follow-up discussion with Satan, intercessors’ prayer group in Garden of Gethsemane, and on and on. He was probably so exhausted at the end of the day, that no matter where He was, whether on a beach or in a boat or in a cave, He knew that when you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. (Proverbs 3:24). When we have reached the end of our physical strength and ability or when our soul is spent from the weight of life’s troubles, our God is still bubbling over with life and energy and hope and purpose and vision for US! Here are Jesus’ words to us in Matthew 11:28-29, Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Whether you are struggling with physical exhaustery or soul exhaustery, God says this, I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint. (Jeremiah 31:25). He has unlimited strength and energy!
