Sometimes the Lord steps right smack dab in the middle of a situation and sovereignly changes the outcome. Since He is omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent, there is often no explanation for His intervention except that He can and does intervene in the affairs of man because of His great wisdom, love, and benevolence toward us. Miracles of divine intervention are evidence of the Lord’s watchful eye on us. Nothing escapes Him, nothing surprises Him, and nothing is impossible for Him.
God’s divine intervention appears rather odd at times. For example, the strange food that came out of heaven when the Israelites were whining to Moses about not having food: And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, "I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel. Speak to them, saying, 'At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. And you shall know that I am the LORD your God.'" So it was that quails came up at evening and covered the camp, and in the morning the dew lay all around the camp. And when the layer of dew lifted, there, on the surface of the wilderness, was a small round substance, as fine as frost on the ground. So when the children of Israel saw it, they said to one another, "What is it?" For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, "This is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat,” Exodus 16:11-15 (NKJV). They called the bread “manna,” which means, “What is it?”
Many years ago, when I was a single mother, “manna” came to the family I lived with. We were all Christians and regularly prayed and thanked the Lord for His provision of food at mealtimes. One day (probably right before payday), our shelves were pretty bare, and we didn’t have a meal to sit down to. Still, we gave thanks to the Lord for His provision. Just then, the doorbell rang. Upon opening the door, there was no one in sight. However, on the porch was a generous stack of bakery boxes. To our surprise and delight, there were blueberry pies in each box! The Lord’s divine intervention provided a tasty pie party out of nowhere! SO much better than quail! Did an angel deliver the pies? I don’t know, but those blueberry pies were a most delectable miracle. That’s what divine interventions are—miracles for us, right here and now.
The Apostle Peter had an astonishing divine intervention while in prison. In Acts 12:5-11, we read,
Peter was therefore kept in prison, but constant prayer was offered to God for him by the church. And when Herod was about to bring him out, that night, Peter was sleeping, bound with two chains between two soldiers, and the guards before the door were keeping the prison. Now behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the prison; and he struck Peter on the side and raised him up, saying, "Arise quickly!" And his chains fell off his hands. Then the angel said to him, "Gird yourself and tie on your sandals," so he did. And he said to him, "Put on your garment and follow me." So he went out and followed him, and did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. When they were past the first and the second guard posts, they came to the iron gate that leads to the city, which opened to them of its own accord; and they went out and went down one street, and immediately the angel departed from him. And when Peter had come to himself, he said, "Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent His angel, and has delivered me from the hand of Herod and from all the expectation of the Jewish people." What a great Get Out of Jail Free pass! What a God!
I was held captive by the chains of multiple sclerosis for sixteen years. After prayer and seeking the Lord for some time, He sovereignly released me from that prison, and within minutes after being released from its hold, I regained nerve impulses and functions that had been seriously compromised as the disease had progressed in my body. The Lord’s divine intervention of healing remains true after sixteen years, and as one doctor commented, “We call this a miracle.” Indeed, we do! The patches of sclerosing are no longer in my brain, and all symptoms are completely gone. The Lord stepped right smack dab in the middle of my situation, and through His mighty deliverance and healing, the outcome changed dramatically.
Aside from healing, deliverance, and provision, divine intervention may appear as a sign—a unique signal from the Lord to reassure us of His awareness and interest in a situation. The first sign Jesus performed occurred at a wedding in Cana, where He turned water into wine when supplies were low. How perfect that miracle was for the situation. Running out of wine for their guests was most humiliating for the hosts, and Jesus divinely intervened by providing 600-900 bottles of the most excellent wine from water.
He wants to interrupt our lives with divine blessing, care, and assistance. According to Webster’s Dictionary, intervene is to interfere with the outcome or course, especially of a condition or process, as to prevent harm or to improve functioning. It’s divine (God) intervention (interference). Let God run interference right smack dab in the middle of your situation! It’ll be divine.
