Remember wanting to fly when you were a little kid? My sisters and I would safety-pin pillowcases on our backs and jump off the bed to fly. It often didn’t go well because we had hardwood floors. Still, we’d climb back up on the bed and jump again, determined to catch the wind in our “wings” and go airborne. If that didn’t work, the pillowcase became a great Superman cape, and we’d run through the house, capes flapping in the breeze, feeling the power of the elements swirling around us. We were strong. We were invincible. We were flat on the ground. Try as we might, we could not rise above our human limitations and circumstances, those being, chiefly, having the weak body of a child and fighting the force of gravity.
How often our human limitations or the circumstances of life dash us to the rocks, in utter weakness and despair. I cannot face this, Lord. I do not have the strength to endure this test, Father. Not another disappointment; I cannot rise above it. The Apostle Paul felt those very things when he was given a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan that tormented him and drained him of his strength. He told us in 2 Corinthians 12:9 that He (the Lord) said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.’ Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me.
Christ’s supernatural strength takes over when we are weak and defeated. Psalm 18:29 says, In Your strength, I can crush an army. It goes on to say, with my God I can scale any wall. That’s much more impressive a climb than scrambling back up onto a bed to see if pillowcase wings work on the descent! Scale ANY wall? What are the walls you face that are draining your strength? Sickness? Financial woes? Family issues? Addiction? In Christ, we can scale any wall. Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31 NKJV). The mighty wind of the Holy Spirit catches us and lifts us above our circumstances and limitations to a place of power and strength. We mount up with wings like eagles, and we are airborne!
Let our declaration today be, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!" (Philippians 4:13).
