One-a-Day...for the Heart: The Living Word

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before His eyes, and He is the one to whom we are accountable. (Hebrews 4:12-13 NLT).

When we write a letter and sign our name at the bottom of it, the authorship is certain. A king’s seal on a letter or document verified the authenticity of it as being the true words of the king. The Word of God—the Bible-- is written proof of what God has said. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right (2 Timothy 3:16 NLT).

Not only does the Bible show proof of authorship and ownership belonging to God, but it is a unique book in that the words are alive. The Word of God is not a documentary or a newspaper; it’s a life-giving compilation of words to us from the Lord. Jesus said, the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life (John 6:63 NLT). The very words are life. They are not just print on a page; they are alive and real.

There’s quite a difference in having a fluffy stuffed dog and having a fluffy real dog. The Word of God is living and active, Hebrews 4:12 declares. The word “active,” in the Greek means “energetic.” The Word of God is an energetic force that gets things done—in our mind, our spirit, our soul, and even in our physical body!

Over two-thousand years ago, something quite remarkable occurred with the Word and really got things done. John 1:14 records, So the Word became human and made His home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen His glory, the glory of the Father's one and only Son. When Jesus Christ was born, the Word became so alive, it became human. It became flesh and dwelt among us, another translation says. God’s Word is powerful enough to create a human life and even more!

Here’s how powerful it is: The Lord merely spoke, and the heavens were created. (Psalm 33:6 ESV). All of creation was made when the words of God were spoken—let there be light; let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water, let dry ground appear, let there be vegetation, let there be lights in the vault of the sky, let the land produce living creatures—and so on until an entire universe was birthed by God’s words.

When you read the Bible, you are ingesting the life of God through His words. What will it create in you? Hope? Peace? Joy? Creativity? Guidance? Jesus said, Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. (Matthew 24:35 ESV). Read the Word of God, and let it begin creating awesomeness in you! It’s alive!
