One-a-Day...for the Heart: Those Eyes

It’s fascinating to think the Lord is omnipresent and can see anyone, anywhere, anytime, for any reason. As a mom, I have sensed having eyes in the back of my head at times when my children were small and heading toward mischief or trouble. At other times, I have wished to have eyes around the entire circumference of my head to keep watch over my kids, but to no avail. Being omnipresent would be an amazing ability for parenting, but only our heavenly Father possesses it.

The eyes of Lord see everything. Proverbs 15:3 (NIV) tells us, The eyes of the LORD are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good. Master of the universe and watchful Father that He is, God Almighty inspects everything—good and evil—in people and their actions, and He judges mankind according to what He sees. His sight goes beyond the physical appearances of men, for He sees our heart and knows our character. Those eyes see us and know us well!

The eyes of the Lord are discerning. Nothing is overlooked as He watches us; nothing is minimized, hidden, or pushed off to the side. The LORD looks down from heaven and sees the whole human race. From His throne He observes all who live on the earth. He made their hearts, so He understands everything they do (Psalm 33:13). “Everything” is every little thing, good or bad, right or wrong, useful or useless. That should be comforting for the saint, but terrorizing for sinners.

How do those eyes make you feel right now, as we face the troubling chaos and confusion of a worldwide pandemic, economic crises, racial unrest, and gross sin all around us? Take comfort; the Lord sees the whole human race…everywhere. He does not suddenly “see” a worldwide pandemic and freak out. He knows the end from the beginning, as Isaiah 46:10 tells us, I declare the end from the beginning, and ancient times from what is still to come. I say, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.’ The NLT version says, Everything I plan will come to pass, for I do whatever I wish. Those eyes take in every little thing, past, present, and future.

He is all-knowing (omniscient) and all-seeing. Angels are full of eyes, as noted in Revelation 4:8 (NKJV), The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within, but God is all eye. Every secret sin, loving act of service, broken heart is seen by God. As children of God, it is very reassuring that our Father keeps a watchful eye on our comings and goings, our actions, thoughts, fears, sorrows, hopes, and so on. We will probably never know how frequently He injects strength, hope, comfort, protection, angelic aid, etc. into our life because He is watching us so attentively. Consider those eyes in the following verses:

1. The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their cry (Psalm 35:15).

2. The eyes of the LORD search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him (2 Chronicles 16:9 NLT).

3. But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear Him, on those whose hope is in His unfailing love (Psalm 33:18 NIV).

4. The eyes of the LORD keep watch over knowledge, but he frustrates the words of the unfaithful. (Proverbs 22:12 NIV).

Those eyes. Those all-seeing, all-knowing, marvelous eyes of God. A famous hymn, written in 1905 by Civilla D. Martin, says it all: His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me. Father, thank you for those eyes!
